About Renaissance City Winds

The Renaissance City Winds has become one of Pennsylvania's foremost chamber ensembles since its founding in 1975.  Touring takes the group throughout the eastern United States, with past appearances at the Kennedy Center, New York's famed Carnegie Recital Hall, and the Pennsylvania Governor's Home.  The Renaissance City Winds has received awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, Chamber Music America, and the Aaron Copland Fund for Music.  It has recorded several CDs and is heard frequently on public radio.  The group is noted for its innovative collaborations with soloists and choirs, Mark Thompson's mime troupe, and several modern dance companies.  Originally a woodwind quintet, the ensemble expanded in 1988 into the Renaissance City Winds to create more exciting programs than ever!  For more information, visit the Contact Us section of the website.  We hope to see you soon at a concert!

In 1975

five young people formed the Renaissance City Woodwind Quintet with the dream of bringing wind chamber music to audiences in southwestern Pennsylvania. With the American Bicentennial approaching, it embarked on

a voyage of discovery by performing neglected music of the United States.

In 1988

the ensemble officially changed its name to Renaissance City Winds as it expanded into a double quintet for performances of rich Romantic pieces and the treasures of 18th-century harmoniemusik. With two flutes, two oboes, two clarinets, two horns, and two bassoons on board, a whole new sonority could be heard in its programs.

In 2010

the Renaissance City Winds performs music for 3-15 winds, tours through 10 states, has received numerous national grants and awards, and is working on its third CD release. Its new season includes a premiere, the newest addition to a list of more than 100 premieres

performed in its history.
